Just returned from a business trip to Korea & loved the Makgeolli! Glad I found this post. Hopefully I can find the namuk cakes at my local Korean supermarket. From what I was told, Makgeolli has a very short shelf-life.

I enjoyed your article about Slovenian honey. Do you know how/where it can be purchased in the US? I have tried working through Slovenski Med and some of its beekeepers. Thank you.

[...] Linden Honey Image by daniellemharms After hearing so much about the tradition of bee keeping in Slovenia, we knew we couldn’t head home without some honey weighing down our suit case. In Ljubljana we were overwhelmed by all our choices, and finally committed to a delicious jar of Linden Honey from a small market in Piran, Slovenia. Its flavor packed a tasty punch in a batch of bread. Read about the delicious bread recipe here: harmsboone.org/linden-honey-baguette [...]

Next time you're in the Cities you absolutely have to come to Harriet Brewing. I just started volunteering there last weekend, and in addition to receiving literally all the free beer I could drink, there staff is fantastic and their beers are spectacular- all Belgian style, sophisticated, and marvelously seasonal.

It would seem like a much more effective thing to do would be to hack in and just delete all the data. That would set BART even further back, forcing them to have all their customers reenter all their data and possibly rebuild parts of their website.

Fantastic inquiries, Greg, and intriguing questions I think. In answer to your final question I would say that yes, the possibility of essential data being outed is a sacrifice people need to be aware of and willing to make when they opt into any kind of system, be it a bank, transit system, etc. It's unfortunate that a certain amount of opting in is pretty much essential in today's world, ie one must have a social security number that is used as identification in any number of situations if you want to live any way other than completely off the grid. No one should be deluded that participation in the public sphere is inherently safe, at least in regards to the lockdown of shared information. I think the American public has been sorely misled as to the nature of the information web in the present age, and education on conscious consumption and conveyance of information is essential.

However, I think it is also up to the public to hold protesters like Anonymous accountable to exactly what you criticize: releasing date of innocent civilians. I would challenge those innocent civilians to demand that hackers and protesters alike explain the intention and benefit behind releasing that kind of information to the world.

A lovely article to read :)

I have now lived in Hungary for 8 months after leaving the UK. The language is still my biggest problem to solve and I somehow feel like a 2 year old child not understanding even basic things.

I am learning - but it's a slow, slow process.

All the best to you!

That is a good question, Alec. I asked about that while we were there and unfortunately didn't get a very clear answer. The rice we used was a bit darker than the generic rice we would get from the markets, and it tasted a bit more complex than something you would eat. If you find out, please tell me!

I cannot wait for the videos- what a fantastic lesson plan idea.

A couple of years ago I remember overhearing Gunter and co. planning for Trica. I have no idea how it went, but was incredibly intrigued by the idea. Maybe one of these days I'll take on the challenge.

I have been reading your blog... It’s great!

I’ve been reading blogs from every country on this planet looking for writers that would make great contributors for an online magazine my daughter and I are developing. I like what you write about. We could help each other.

My name is Patrick McCormick and our magazine is called “The e-Buffet”. Our prototype is online now. I hope you will take a look at it. It’s only been a month and we have assembled a remarkable group of talented artists and writers. It has become a Creative Collaboration and we are growing stronger every day.

There are several excellent reasons for our early success recruiting this talent. First, it is a great opportunity to promote your own blog or website. Second we do not charge our contributors or make them work for free, we actually intend to pay them. The creators of The e-Buffet will take ten percent of the total gross revenue each month and place it into a pool to be split by the contributors. Admittedly, we are a start-up business and do not have deep pocket, so the pool will be small at first. However, with the type of artists we are attracting, I predict our readership will grow quickly.

So, I like your work and I offer you the same opportunity that I have given the others. If you get in touch with me now, you can still place some of your material in the first issue due out June 1, 2011. Oh, the first few months you can submit articles and photographs that have all ready been published elsewhere. I hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you for your time,

I have been reading your blog… It’s great!

Patrick McCormick

Hi Cathy,
There are definitely cherry blossom trees around the lake. It's a gorgeous site, but be warned that on one side there are many resorts and restaurants and when the flowers are in bloom, it can get ridiculously busy. The majority of the lake is not as congested, however. Good luck!

Greg, I am confused by your grading schema. I think there is an error in your statement “They would get a 5 (an A) if they could solve the problem without speaking English.” It seems to me that the best grade would go those who solved the problem only speaking English.

Hi Greg!

I'm a current Gustie, and we are doing an article for the Weekly focusing on the exchange program with China. As a world traveler and a former UIC student, I thought you would have some unique insight! We're on a tight deadline, so if you have time answers before Wed. morning would be great.

*What inspired you to study at UIC?
*What were the most shocking differences between American and Chinese university life?
*How did your trip to China foster the desire to travel more?
*What would you say to students considering studying abroad (particularly in China)?
*How did going to a liberal arts college influence your future?

If you could e-mail responses, I would be SO HAPPY!

Also, super jealous of your whole adventure! I want to go to eastern Europe so badly!

I'll return to this post tomorrow, but at least two things make me doubt the accuracy of it..

1) "certain foods export across cultures better than others. While that may certainly be true, it is a myopic analysis that isolates food from the larger context of the food’s cultural origin." is a deal-breaker. Dan is talking about the food in a foreign culture and if you admit that his point is true and THEN try to address the food's "cultural origin" you are indulging in the error that the Korean International Food Marketers do. They think of cultural origin, not the culture to which the food is introduced. This is marketing fail Number One. LOL... "export" works in the landing country, not the weird fantasies of the exporting one..

2) Salmon's "point" about interviewing those who "know" how hangul sounds being a bad approach? That's insane. These are people who know the pronunciation in BOTH languages.. consequently they might be able to figure out how the sounds of hangul would translate into the sounds of English.

The concluding points, which don't seem to be coated in animus, are right on.

I mean.. how could properly marketed BBQ not work? And all the theoretical palaver about the Rhetoric of Motives? Sure.. and the other great thing about BBQ is that it does cut through theoretical crap and bring us all together at a communal table. And this is particularly true of Korean BBQ.

This harmsboone post strains mightily under its own weight.

LOL.. as I do. ^^

Ah, yes, the voice of Danielle. It cannot be mistaken. I LOVE your stories; all from a day's work. There are always so many; keep writing them down. I wish I had started writing them down when I first started. Have you read the book 32 Third Graders and One Class Bunny? Very funny snippets from the classroom. I've always toyed with writing a book similar to that just full of stories from the "trenches" but life keeps getting in the way. :)

Your mom told me about your site. Would love to keep in touch. You have my email above. :)

How one can take student witticisms and create such a great story is beyond me. Although, if I had your writing talent I could do the same with some of mine this week. Rayquan, who forgot his tennis shoes, informed us that he was going to walk home butt naked on Wednesday. Another kindergartner has also forgotten his tennis shoes. His caring friend asked if he was "a walker" to which the shoeless replied, "yes". The friend says, "uh oh - you have a problem, it's going to be a cold walk home". Shoeless, with his divine insights says, "I'm not dumb enough to forget my boots!!!" Ah - the minds of the fresh and undaunted! Keep up the writings.
